Bon Shopping: What To Buy In French St. Martin

For a truly charming shopping experience, head to Marigot on the French side of the island. Like a piece of the French Riviera picked up from the Old World and plopped down into the Caribbean, Marigot offers an incredibly exotic retail and gastronomic experience, since many of the city's boutiques and restaurants are congregated around the city's two marinas. Here in the beautiful Marina Royale shopping center you'll find the hottest names in designer jewelry and watches, as well as the latest in French (of course!) and Italian fashions with such names as Dolce & Gabbana, Hommes, Hermes, Versace and much more. Next to the Marina Fort-Louis, the beautiful Le West Indies Mall boasts numerous boutiques and stores selling name-brand merchandise like Lacoste, in addition to fine perfumes, eyewear, leather goods and shoes. But you needn't be in a hurry here: The laid-back French attitude that permeates Marigot is perfectly conducive to sipping fine French wines in the afternoon, or snacking on exquisite crepes and savoring a café au lait.

While here, be sure and visit Diamond Creations (Part of the Diamond's International group) in Marigot in the Le West Indies Shopping Center, where you'll find a huge selection of diamond jewelry, precious stones and more.

Also at Le West Indies and established in 1950, Lacoste carries nearly 55 colors of the classic polo, in addition to shoes, children's polos, handbags and watches.

For a magnificent selecion of French accessories, visit the Lancel boutique in Le West Indies Mall in Marigot, which sells a variety of designer luggage and handbags, briefcases and more.

The popular Little Switzerland chain also has a branch here, on rue de la République (590-590-87-50-03). Here the focus is more on French products, however, with designer French perfumes leading the way, in addition to leather goods, gifts and souvenirs.

If you're looking for a truly unique gift that's emblematic of your stay in St. Maarten/Martin, visit Vanity First in Le West Indies shopping mall or on the Marigot waterfront for a bottle of Eau de St Martin perfume. With its soft and fresh notes of Guavaberry, this fresh and invigorating fragrance exemplifies the spirit of the island and is designed for both men and women.

For one of the island's largest selections of wines and Champagnes, head to Vinissimo, voted the island's best wine shop by the readers of the Daily Herald. Located at the corner of Rue President Kennedy and Rue Low Town, Vinissimo stocks more than 400,000 bottles and offers deliver to villas, hotels, and yachts. There's a sommelier on duty and free wine tastings on Thursday afternoons.

Don't leave the city without visiting the outdoor Marigot Marketplace on the waterfront near Le West Indies, a great place for purchasing tie-dyed clothing, souvenirs, exotic island seasonings and more.
