Local Treasures: St. Maarten / St. Martin's Offshore Islands
Escapes to exotic, uninhabited islands are a short boat ride away from St. Maarten/St. Martin's eastern shores. A Jet Ski™ or taxi boat from Orient Beach, a ferry from French Cul de Sac, a sailing catamaran or your own private boat charter can transport you to St. Maarten/St. Martin's local tropical treasures, the uninhabited French islands of Pinel, Green Cay and Tintamarre.
Pinel. This is the easiest of the three islands to get to. Just wait at the ferry dock in French Cul de Sac for the five-minute ferry. Two ferries run back and forth from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (but make sure to check with your boat captain for his last pick-up time). Pinel is a protected nature reserve and the beach is sheltered, calm and shallow. It is perfect for little kids and parents who want to relax. Lunch, beach chairs and umbrellas are available on the beach. There is also great hiking around the island and private beaches to be found. Insider tip: The homemade banana rum at the Caribuni Restaurant is amazing.
Green Cay. The smallest of the three islands, Green Cay is totally deserted and uninhabited (unless you count a few goats). It's a great spot for sun tanning and romantic retreats. Be sure to plan ahead and bring plenty of water and sun block if you plan on spending an afternoon.
Tintamarre. This island is a favorite of St. Martin boaters because the beach wraps around a calm, sheltered bay and provides a picturesque anchorage. Tintamarre is famous for its "magical" mud baths. Just beyond the tree line, you'll find this rather uninviting puddle of mud. Lather it on, bake in the sun and when you rinse off in the cool water, your skin will feel silky smooth. Whales and dolphins are occasionally spotted cavorting around this charming island.
